The Oil You Are Meant To Keep

Nearly every essential oil is a race against time. Patchouli is the exception, and almost nobody selling it explains that.

Fresh patchouli is comparatively rough. Left alone in the bottle it deepens, smooths and rounds out, the way a good wine does, and old patchouli is genuinely prized rather than merely tolerated. Which means a distillation date on this label is useful information rather than a countdown.

The other half of the story is what happens before distillation. Our leaf is shade-dried and lightly fermented, a slow preparation that most large-scale production skips because it costs time. It is the difference between a flat, thin patchouli and one with the depth people actually want.

Then, and Only Then, the Still

We distil rather than buy in, which on a material this often blended down is the only way to know what the base note in your bottle actually is.

The prepared leaf is packed and steamed, and what separates is thick, dark and unmistakable: damp forest floor, sweet wine cellar, cocoa and aged wood together.

Heavy oils give up their best late in the run, so we take each charge out fully. Stopping early on patchouli means throwing away precisely the fraction that makes it a fixative.

Printed with the bottling date and lot, and on this oil it tells you how far along the maturing has got. Amber throughout, small retail bottles and bulk containers alike. Pure Pogostemon cablin, undiluted, with no gurjun, copaiba or carrier oil.

Shade-Dried, Then Left To Ferment

Pogostemon cablin is a bushy mint-family plant cultivated in Indonesia and India, grown for its broad soft leaves rather than for any flower.

Cut leaf is dried in shade rather than sun, because direct heat drives off the very compounds that make patchouli worth having. It is then left to ferment lightly, which breaks down the cell structure and lets the still reach oil that would otherwise stay locked in the leaf.

Ours comes from certified organic growers. Both the drying and the fermentation are slow, unglamorous stages, and both are where a cheap patchouli is usually made cheap.

Depth, Measured Rather Than Described

Every batch goes to an independent third-party laboratory, which matters on an oil this easy to extend.

Patchoulol

The heavy alcohol behind patchouli's depth and its fixative behaviour. The single most useful figure here.

Alpha-bulnesene and pogostol

Supporting sesquiterpenes that confirm properly prepared and fully distilled leaf.

Patchouli is regularly cut with gurjun balsam, copaiba or vegetable oil. The analysis looks for all three.

Practical Notes

We make no medical claims about patchouli. Its value is as a base note and a natural fixative, and that is a perfumer's argument rather than a clinical one.

Dilute well before it meets skin, and trial one small area beforehand. Tenacity is the point of it, and also the risk: one drop too many lingers on skin and cloth for days.

It will stain a light surface and it does not wash out of pale cloth easily. Unlike everything else here, you do not need to hurry to finish the bottle: kept cool, dark and closed, it will be better in two years than it is today.
